The Green Bay Packers were founded on August 11, 1919 by
Curly Lambeau and
George Whitney Calhoun.
[1] Lambeau solicited funds for uniforms from his employer, the
Indian Packing Company. He was given $250 for uniforms and equipment, on the condition that the team be named for its sponsor. Today, "Green Bay Packers" is the oldest team name still in use in the NFL.
The
Green Bay Packers have won more championships, at 12, than any other team in the NFL
On the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field, the Green Bay Packers battle for pride in the National
Football League. The not-for-profit corporation owns and operates the storied franchise, which was founded in 1919 by Earl "Curly" Lambeau and joined the NFL in 1921. Home to such icons as Bart Starr, Ray Nitschke, and legendary coach Vince Lombardi, Green Bay boasts a record 13 league titles including four Super Bowl victories. The team is also the only community-owned franchise in American professional sports with more than 100,000 shareholders. The shares do not increase in value nor pay dividends, and can only be sold back to the team.
